Whats the UK Minimum wage for a 19 year old & is it legal to work for less?

Resolved Question

Whats the UK Minimum wage for a 19 year old & is it legal to work for less?

I've been interviewed today for a job as a sales assistant. I'll be paid 4.77 (British Pounds per hour. I'm sure this is under the minimum wage, and as this is a company...Is that illegal? I'll take the job anyway if I'm offered it as I need the money.

Additional Details

Oh cool, that's good then :) Xx

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1 October 2008 are:

£5.73 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older
A development rate of £4.77 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
£3.53 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age
so therefore they will be paying you the legal minimum wage

  • The minimum wage will increase in October, when it will be £4.83 for a 19yo; at the moment it's the minimum wage that you're entitled to, so nothing illegal about it.
