None...but you must look the part. Its very important that the owners attract the right clientelle for they're salon. If its a trendy salon then the owners like the staff to look trendy its all about the image they are trying to promote.
You just have to give the impression at the interview that you are really interested in hairdressing, be enthusiastic ask the right questions and smile. You will be meeting a lot of people and need to be a real people person...If after a trial period the owner of the salon likes how you are getting on with the staff and customers he will invest in you and you will get your apprenticeship or train you via another route.

  • You would need to finish Cosmetology school first. It usually takes about 11 months to do that--then you can apply at places to be an apprentice. They normally just have you wash & dry hair though, sweep, etc. If you are really confident in your skills by the time you graduate beauty school, I suggest skipping this and get out there and build your clientele. You will make more money that way, without having to be an underdog. Even starting at a lower paying franchise-like place (ie. SuperCuts, etc.) is better than working for free. Places like that usually pay you a flat rate of $10 an hour plus tips. This is because you are a newbie and do not have clientele yet. After about a year you should have a solid base and be able to go rent your own booth or ask for higher commission. Good Luck in your journeys! :-)
