You're right to ask for opinions from others as it's often the only way to establish a web istes authenticity. Some other ways of 'learning' about other sites is to do some checks such as a whois lookup:

Just enter the domain name and check how long it's been running and who it's registered to.
Also, Alexa can give you a better idea as to site popularity, number of visitors, past performance etc. http://www.alexa.com/
