Work experience help?

Resolved Question

Work experience help?

i need idea's of anywhere to go or places you might of been ?
Thankyou :D x

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

I had this exact same problem. I did mine in a pharmacy at Tesco. It was really interesting considering how boring it may sound. If you looking for experience over the summer i would get in now and send out a few letters. If you leave it too late people are not keen on the idea...it takes about two months for an application to go through any company so get onto it now :)

  • yeah

like, as long as your hourly pay rate remains the same

say you normally work 40 hours a week and take home $800, but one week you only work 20 hours and take home $400, that would be ok

it wouldn't be ok if you normally get $800 for 40 hours and then he randomly says one week that he still needs you to work 40 hours but will only give you $400
  • Yes they can because of health & safety regulations. No doubt you could be on here asking if you can sue as your premises are too cold.

I've just started working as a Health Care Assistant at a hospital and don't like it...?

Resolved Question

I've just started working as a Health Care Assistant at a hospital and don't like it...?

I'm 17 and suffer from anxiety and I'm not enjoying going. I have to be back there tomorrow and I've been in tears because I don't want to go back but I'm scared to tell anyone that I really don't like it. I wanted my family to be proud of me but if I tell them I don't want to do it anymore and pull out of the course, then I'll have nothing to do. I came out of college to do the course and I won't know what to do from there. What do you think I should do?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

I think that perhaps you should stick it out for a bit longer and see what happens. I've worked in situations that I haven't liked to begin with, but after a while, things have begun to improve and I have gained from the experience.

Working in a hospital can be scary at times, especially if you're new, but it can also be very rewarding and will give you some valuable life experience.

When I first started my nurse training I was terrified, but after a while I started to enjoy it and met some wonderful people along the way.

Please try to give yourself just a little bit longer. If you're anxiety is very bad then see your doctor and ask for some Propranolol - this is a beta blocker drug and will block the action of adrenaline on the heart - this will relax you and make you feel calmer. It is non addictive and safe and you can come off it when you feel better.

I hope you start to feel better soon. Remember that sometimes the things that scare us the most can lead to us being stronger people in the long run if we have the courage to face them.

Good Luck xxx

  • Don't spend your life doing something you don't like, but also don't give up too easily on too many things either. At some times, in some situations, in some places, you just have to Cowboy Up and work through what you don't want to, at the very least to convince yourself and others that you've given it your best effort.

    Good luck.
  • I know it's hard, but go in tomorrow because you have done it once and you can do it again. Try and take it an hour at a time. Saying I will just get through this hour. At the same time you will be helping people which will take your mind off problems-and you can do it! After you get through that day you will be proud of yourself. Try hard not to think outside of the day if you can. We can only live in one day at a time-and if we try and think like that we are not overawed by the seeming endless labour in the years ahead. Oh a prayer to God will help-I guarantee it. You are His daughter after all and He loves you!

    Source(s):

  • there is no point in carrying on, you need to go back to college and tell them and see if you can find anything else, child care, teaching assistant, even till operator in tesco, health and beauty,or as daft as it might seem, maybe even bricklaying or painting and decorating, see if there is anything suitable
  • your family will be supportive of whatever your choice is, if your 17 i shouldnt worry about it...theres plenty more options for you to do, theres people goingon 30 that still dont no what they want to do... if you dont like it then quit.. then focus on the things you like until you get inspired to try something else.
  • IF U DONT LIKE IT NOW U WON'T LIKE IT 5 YRS DOWN THE LINE AND IF U WAIT UNTIL THEN TO DROP OUT THEN U WILL JUST WASTE TIME THAT U COULD BE USING TO GO BACK TO COLLEGE AND DOING SOMETHING THAT IS MORE UP UR ALLEY

IF U ALREADY CANT STAND IT NOW THEN BELIEVE ME, THE LONGER U STAY U WILL NOT HELP...DONT SUCK IT UP AND DO IT JUST BECAUSE U DONT WANT TO DISAPPOINT UR FAMILY BECAUSE EVENTUALLY IT WILL GET TO YOU AND IT WILL BECOME TOO MUCH TO BEAR AND UR GONNA END UP LEAVING ANYWAY

SO MY BEST ADVICE IS TO EXPLAIN TO UR PARENTS HOW UR FEELING AND GO BACK TO COLLEGE AND DO SOMETHING YOU REALLY WANT TO DO ...IF COLLEGE IS NOT THE THING FOR YOU AND YOU DONT THINK U CAN DEDICATE URSELF TO UR WORK FOR 2 YEAQRS (ASSOCIATE DEGREE) OR 4 YEARS(BACHELORS DEGREE) THEN JUST GO TO A TECHNICAL INSTITUTE AND DO A SHORT PROGRAM AND GET A DIPLOMA(1 YEAR) OR A CERTIFICATE OF CREDIT( SOME PROGRAMS ARE AS SHORT AS 2-3 MONTHS)

THERE IS ALWAYS SOME OTHER OPTION. UR ONLY SEVENTEEN..U HAVE TIME ...MAKE THE BEST OF IT

    GOOD LUCK ..I HOPE I HELPED :)

How do you encourage your employees out on road to get sales leads?

Resolved Question

How do you encourage your employees out on road to get sales leads?

Without paying them extra, it should really be a part of their job.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Review their compensation model.

If you want employees to sell, you need to ensure that a large part of their compensation is tied to their sales. So give them a small base salary and a large commission portion; that will make them try to sell more.

You can also make use of non financial incentives - such as recognizing an employee who has made a good sale, or has taken an account away from a competitor - and give them recognition before their peers. Call a general company meeting and acknowledge the employee, then give him/her a coveted parking space, or a small gift card, whatever. You will be pleasantly surprised how effective such non-monetary incentives can be. People always love being recognized before their colleagues - use that to your advantage and benefit. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

I went for an informational interview on Dec 23. He wants to meet again. What are my possibilities for hiring?

Resolved Question

I went for an informational interview on Dec 23. He wants to meet again. What are my possibilities for hiring?

I went for an informational interview at a place I would like to work (lasted an hour). Before that meeting, the hiring mgr told my contact that he didn't have a position but he liked my background and so he is looking with an eye towards the future. We met on Dec 23rd and yesterday, I received an email from the mgr which said he wanted to meet again. So I'm now scheduled to go in on Thursday morning.

What do you think about this situation? Is he perhaps more prepared to hire now? How do you see my possibilities and what should I expect at this meeting?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

To answer your question directly, your chances are very very good. Managers do not have time to waste on someone that may be a good fit at some point in the future.

With that said, you sound a little desperate and that is something that is very hard to hide. Just relax - they obviously like you.

You should be prepared for an offer. But you should also go in prepared to sell yourself. Also try to tell the manager a couple of reasons why you like the position. Too many people come across as just being interested in a paycheck - that is so unprofessional.

Best of luck!

i think the minimum day is 6 hours where you can work without a break. I dont think 4 hours is enough to have a break.. i often work 6 hours before i have a break and certainly more than 4.

Other Answers (4)

  • I would tell them that unless I got a ten minute or so break while working there, I wouldn't be working there. I use to get worked for 6+ hours and they said breaks or lunches were "frowned upon". I quit. You aren't entitled, but if a job doesn't give it to you it's not the place to work.
  • in the US there are no federal laws that says anyone other than minors in the workplace get breaks or meals periods, there are a few states that make provisions for breaks , you don't say what state you are in so no further info can be given
  • your not legally entitled to any breaks because your only contracted to work 4 hours. if you were to work over that say by 2 hours you would be then allowed 10 mins,
  • Here in the UK you're entitled to a break if you work over 4 hours, it's law so don't worry about requesting a break.

In a job interview, do you tend to notice whether the candidate is wearing a watch?

Resolved Question

In a job interview, do you tend to notice whether the candidate is wearing a watch?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

not at all

Other Answers (4)

  • No. The watch is not important unless the candidate uses it to respect the employer (golden Rolex for example). Depending on the shirt it is not always easy to see whether the applicant has any watch. Be honest, be yourself on the interview and do not worry about the watch. If they hire you it will be because of your skills and personality. If you care about such small detail like the watch, most probably you are very tactful person. And that is already an advantage. Good luck!

    Source(s):

  • Only if they make a point of it :-)

I once started an Interview 30 mins late .. the other candidate 'overran' as we asked a lot of additional questions .. the next candidate came in and made a point of looking at his watch 2 or 3 times before we started (needless to say, we didn't offer him the job)
  • I have conducted many interviews and have never bothered what the candidate was wearing provided that it was appropriate for the type of work. A watch is usually hidden.
  • Watches are old fashioned I just look at my iPhone screen

What do you think this means? outcome of interview?

I applied online for job with an energy supplier as an administrator. I went for the assessment/interview and was told that I'be be called with the results a few days later. I received the call while at work and so an answephone message was left. The message from the recruiter stated 'Please call back for the outcome of your interview, I have some great news for you'.
I called back but the recruiter is now out of the office until next week. I logged on to my online application and it has been updated to say that my application for the role cannot be taken any further and that I am no longer under consideration.
I don't understand as the answerphone message said she had 'great news' for me.
They did say at interview that the job I applied for had been filled but that vacancies in other departments may become available.
I am now having to stew all weekend, just wondered if anyone wouldn't mind giving me their opinion?? Thanks

  • Sounds like the job that you applied for has been filled, but that you are being considered for another position.

This was my first reaction when you said that your status says that your application can't be taken any further. The fact that they told you this at the interview confirms it. They wouldn't have told you at the interview that the position you'd applied for had been filled if they didn't have another job that they could interview you for. They would have just called you and canceled your interview -- or they would have just made it really brief and not elaborated on the job.

I think that this is pretty clearly what's going on. Call back when the recruiter is back in town.

Can I get some career advice please?

Resolved Question

Can I get some career advice please?

Im in high school, S4, Scotland. Next month we'll be choosing our higher subjects and I still don't have a career in mind. I was wondering, using the following points about me, someone could suggest ideas or even areas where I could get a job, or study to get that job.
The standard grades I chose were, maths, english, french, history, media studies, computing, biology and chemistry.
I definitely don't want to continue with history and chemistry.
I wanted to work with animals for a long time, something like guide dog training but I went off that. It was then I became interested in learning braille and sign language, and I would like to start self teaching myself that if I find a use for it eg. my career path
After I had chosen my standard grade subjects I became interested in interior design also- tv shows like '60 minute makeover' and room design. However I'm concerned I might not be able to get into that because I didn't take art or design technology. I'm also a little interested in photography.
I don't mind computing and Im quite good at it but I dont want to be sitting in front of a computer for half my life. Media studies is fun (analysis of film work), but I hate acting so I suppose if I went for this path I would work backstage.
So basically my problems are that I've become interested in subjects that I didn't take, I don't know what to continue with because I cant see a career- any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Dont worry too much about having to have a 'Career path' mapped out at your age.
Take subjects that really interest you. In doing so you will be motivated to work hard at those subjects because you enjoy them.
Getting the best grades you can is more important than having the career in mind at this stage. (If you know absolutely what you want to do at this age then
1. you are in the minority
2. You are lucky but will probably change your mind by the time you get to working in that field.
3.you would be tied into working in subjects you may not like and so may not succeed!
Enjoy study for it's own merits while you can and opportunities will arise as you progress.
Good luck and above all ENJOY the learning for itself!

OK.. forget about what area of interest you should be involved in as many of us in the real world end up doing jobs that are unrelated to our interests... better if you focus on what transferable skills and personality traits you you. If your school does not provide an isometric test or indeed the belban test maybe you should go online and see if you can find a free download version of these tests and do some. There are no righ or wrong answers to these tests but they help work out what sort of person you are... a leader, a negotiator, a creative, a sellor etc... this will help you know what best postion to aim for whether in a field of interest or not. I was a plant (no not meaning vegatable) meaning power plant... I am great at creating ideas and concepts... but really bad at leading large group, doing hard sell. Some of my colleagues at university turned out to be good leaders, others negotiators etc. Many top blue chip companies even ask candidates to take the test to see if they are the right kind of people to join or at least to help them work out which departments they will best work in. Its kinda fun as a test as well!

Help working out holiday en

Resolved Question

Help working out holiday entitlement?

I am leaving my current job, i started working there on 01/07/09 my last working day will be 14/01/10, i have taken no holidays during this period, i work part time 20 hours a week over 4 days.

Does anybody know how many holidays i would have accrued during this period. My employers leave year runs from april.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

OK = you work part time, 20 hrs in 4 day week, so your Working Day is 5 hours (and your working week = 4 days)

Your legal minimium holidays entitlement is 5.6 working weeks PER YEAR (link).

Your working week is 4 days, so you are entitled to a minimium of 5.6 * 4 = 22.4 Working Days per year.

You worked for only part of a year (1 July - 14 Jan) I make that 28 weeks (out of 52)

So your actual accrued holidays are 28/52 * 22.4 = 12.06 working days (if you are paid hourly, this is 12.06 * 5 = 60.3 hours).

(for those who are interested, the employers 'holiday year' IS significant in that if you fail to take your holidays before the end of the 'holiday year' you may loose them)

Under CURRENT UK law, Bank Holidays CAN be counted (by your employer) as part of your Holiday Entitlement .. if this is so, the you will have to deduct 5hrs (1 working day) for each Bank Holiday during the period (there where at least 4, = August Bank Holiday, Xmas day, Boxing day and New years day) UNLESS you actually worked those days, of course.

So, if they offer you more than 8 days holiday payment you are doing well.

I quit my job after an argument. I want to go back. What should I do?

My manager is an asshole. He keeps picking holes in my work. I told him to stop but he wouldn't. I even wrote him an email and a letter but he wouldn't stop. He's nice but verly professional. Today he contradicted my work report and I flipped out and told him where to stick his job. I filed for unemployment but they told that I wasn't eligable because I had quit my job. I was gobsmacked. I have rent and bills to pay. I'm screwed. What should I do?

I want to go back even if it's temporary.

You can only approach him by phone or physically go in and basically apologise for your actions. If he still refuses to take you back on you STILL need to keep your cool for reference purposes. I walked out on a job went back in the next day walked into my bosses office and said"is it worth me putting my boots on?" he replied no and i left it at that (lol) job was crap and low pay anyway...

I would start looking for a new job and I would take what ever it is you can get. Even if it's cleaning toilets at KFC, otherwise you'll shortly find yourself homeless.

  • I can't imagine a case that wouldn't be more influenced by personality (and there's no way two people are identical in personality).

And the nature of the job would definitely affect which degree was more relevant. In just about any job, a second language would be very, very useful, in some jobs, it's essential.

Business Studies always seems so bland and vague to me -- as if the person didn't' really know what they wanted to do or what interested them.
  • the one who performs better at the interview, interviews are an art form.
theres nothing between them, the interviewers probably dont have a preference of a language gcse or a business gcse, they might, but its very very unlikely.
but yeah, more than one gcse, 5 good (A-C) is the minimum usually including english and maths.

oh and as for the best languages as a cv booster in the UK:
    Mandarin>French or German> Spanish
its still good mind you, not terribly useful only at gcse level however, good to go further with it, maybe.

as for picking the easy option, im curious, since in my day a modern foreign language was compulsary, I did both spanish and business studies.
