Do Jobcentre staff contact past employers to find out about people who are signing on?

Yes, they often write to employers checking why people's employment has ended. They then sometimes follow up with more detailed questionnaires to the employer. They use the info to decide if someone should get job seeker's allowance - someone who has voluntarily given up a job, or been dismissed for misconduct will usually have to wait a lengthy period before they can start receiving benefits.
