Can I claim housing benefit without signing on?

Resolved Question

Can I claim housing benefit without signing on?

My contract ends in a few weeks and I haven't got anything else lined up

I plan to live off my final wage (about £1200) instead of claiming Jobseekers. But if I do that can I still claim housing benefit and council tax rebate?

yes of course you can, get the forms to apply direct from your local council offices, do it asap because they take a couple weeks to sort it out.
They will want info from you such as your last 5 payslips, i.d obviously, up to date bankstatements, your final wage slip and a letter from you employer stating that your no longer working and ot being paid after such and such a date

  • In order to claim housing benefit, you need to show that you have an an income to cover your other expenses. This will be fine for you at first, but what if you have no income once your final wage runs out?

I don't understand why you don't want to claim JSA. When you pay your National insurance contributions through your wages, you are paying for times when you need to claim, for unemployment through no fault of your own, medical treatment, pension etc. If you had a car accident and paid insurance, would you say " oh, I'm not going to claim"?

So, why not do something useful with your final wages like investing in some qualifications, and make a claim on the insurance policy you've paid into?

It's true that when you claim JSA, you're expected to actively seek work etc, but you would do that in any case, wouldn't you? By the way, I do know from personal experience how unpleasant the Jobcentre can be, so I'm not being idealistic here.

So, having got the present problem managed- what would you like to do in terms of your career?
  • Yes of course you can claim for housing benefit, whether you get it is a different matter and on 1200 a month income i seriously doubt you would.
  • You should still claim JSA as you are below the threshold and you can get housing benefit and Council Tax benefit. You wont get a rebate. Claim now.
