Reapplying for my old job?

How ridiculous is bureaucracy when, in having to reapply to my old job, I have to give references and the only reference I can give is from... that same job! This kind of stuff with filling in forms really annoys me. They know me, they know what I have done and can do, but they cannot rehire me until we go through this merry-go-round. It really stresses me out.

Perhaps more of a rant than a question, but it is ridiculous right? I'm not just imagining it!

Don't take it personally these forms are often standard and don't apply to specific situations, particularly with a large organisation.
Everything has to be on a level playing field for you and any other applicants, otherwise they can be accused of favouritism. Just answer best you can and send them in.
I get annoyed at irrelevant questions in forms too.
But try to see the big picture, the form wasn't created just for you, but tries to cover a wide range of applicants.

  • It's because they're humble enough to accept a job that pays the bills, rather than being up their own backsides thinking they "deserve" a well-paid job - like you probably are.

    And His Girl, you need to stop being so judgemental. The majority of people on the dole are on it because they need it. You'd think by now, with so many people losing jobs, people would finally get out their own backsides and have the sense to realise that. Yet still they carry on believing the Sun so-called newspaper or their posh "I've-got--hundred-of-thousands-of-pound… broadsheets. What should we do, let people friggin starve? Have as many homeless people as America has? Use your brain.
  • Consider the possibility they might do such poorly paid work because they HAVE GOT pride and want to stand on their own two feet and provide for their needs. The work is a means to an end and that end might be dignity, freedom from the demeaning experience imposed by the benefits system, a little more money being available for essentials or maybe something as simple as providing a step on the ladder towards a better paid job.

    There is the argument that employers will continue to pay the appallingly low minimum wage as long as others are prepared to accept that wage. There is probably some truth in that but there is another side to it. We, as consumers, are inclined to buy at the lowest price possible and to demand that our local services are provided at the minimum cost. That makes*us* the drivers of the minimum wage economy.

    I accept it's not as simple as that ... that some people have no choice about accepting minimum wage or that some employers target potential employees with few choices and no bargaining power. Another element must be that those of us who earn a good wage are comfortable in our wealth and are unwilling to concede a more equitable value being given to different jobs. We don't have to improve the wage of the low paid because we don't want to and because we know there is bugger-all they can do to MAKE us.

    If the world were suddenly deprived of one group of workers, I suspect I would miss lavatory cleaners before I would miss advertising account managers .... and we all know which of those is likely to be on the minimum wage.
  • You look at someone doing a min. wage job as someone with no pride .. hmm well personally I see them the other way, they would rather do a min wage job than take from the state and that to me gives them a whole lot of pride.

    I've been there, stacking supermarket shelves, serving petrol, waiting tables and to be honest i've found it a lot easier to find another job while being employed as it says something to the people who interview you for other jobs .. it tells them you want to work.

    I think the people who sneer at min wage jobs are the ones who need to look at their pride.

I sent my CV to a company via email, and have been sent back the following reply:
"With your permission we would like to keep your cv for 6 months, please advise on salary requirements."

How do I reply to that without sounding silly ! I'm a bit stumped on what to reply, any advice would be ever so much appreciated! This is the first time I have applied for a job... my last job i didn't even have an interview, they just offered me the job there and then... so help!

I would write something like this:

Dear (their name),

Thank you for your reply. I am very interested in career opportunities at (your company). Please do consider me for future openings.

My salary requirements will depend on the requirements of the position and the value I can bring to your company. As I am continually adding to my skill set, I would prefer that we discuss salary at a time when you have a suitable position and I can learn more about the specific opportunity at that time.

I do look forward to hearing from you.

  • They are very formally advising you that they would like to know your salary requirements before ANY consideration is given. They are essentially forcing you to make the first offer - putting you at a disadvantage in salary negotiations. That's tipping your hand. Ideally you should make the other guy offer a price or a salary first.

    If you go to high - they'll keep your resume on file for 6 months. If you go to low they may think... what a bargain! Or... pricing yourself to low, decreases your value. Be careful to to NOT devalue yourself. Would you hire a roofer for $75. You are going to pay that just for him/her to come out. What salary will you accept just to come out?

    You were offered your last job on the spot??? You must be a "all that", so good things will happen to you.
  • Seems a very strange response. Firstly, they don't need your permission to keep your c.v. six months. Secondly, they must know at least the general levels of salary appertaining to the jobs within their organisation. If in their eyes you are suitable for a particular job they should say so rather than putting you on the spot as they have done.
    Very difficult. I would probably give them a ring to see what they have in mind.

Take deep breaths , dress smartly as said before , when you go in smile like you have never smiled before , make and keep eye contact aswell all the way through as it shows your confident

i always imagine that because im quite a shy person when i go to an interview this person doesnt know who i am so i can reinvent myself to be this amazingly confident and happy person because they dont know any different x I have never been to an interview and not got the job and i think thats why xx trust me it works wonders

I have just recently been thrown out of my boyfriends house by his mother and I am 26 weeks pregnant, I had a job full time. I was asked to leave the day after and was basically given no time to find a place so I had to move back to my parents as I had to family down there (40 miles away) and had to leave my job as I couldn't drive or being pregnant it isn't good to travel that far everyday. The day after I called my company I worked for and asked if they could transfer me, but a week later they said the branch in preston have no vacancies.

I had no choice but to go onto jsa, because I had to leave my job due to circumstances I had to fill in an extra form in at my jsa interview telling the situation as to why I left my job.

A week later I received a letter saying my claim was processed and I would get money in every 2 weeks

The job CENTRE sent me a letter regarding the statement over me leaving the job asking me to give them more information as to what dates I was thrown out of the house by my boyfriends mum and what date did I ask Sainsbury's for a transfer.

Im worried now they will stop my claim even though I had no choice to leave :( I did ring up a decision maker and explained why I had to leave and she said everything will be fine but im still worried

As for my boyfriend he is still supporting me and the baby and he will be moving to were I live

it should be ok it just the job centre double checking what you have said and wrote in your statement so they can check with your last job,worse that they can do is pay you at a reduced amount for a few weeks but you only have a few weeks then you can transfer over to income support and sign off jsa hope this helped to ease your worry and good luck with baby.

  • Don't tell them about the mum problem, just tell them you moved back home cause you are pregnant and there was no job for your from your company in the area you moved back to, if the boyfriend is supporting you they wont give you benefit, when baby is born I think it is £20 you can get for maintenance from him
  • I'm not 100% sure on all of the legalities but just for some support and friendly advice, I wouldn't worry too much. As long as you're unemployed or working less than 16 hours weekly, seeking a job and don't have any money stashed away that you haven't told the Jobcentre about, I doubt anything will affect your claim. It does however sound like you were dismissed on unfair grounds, why were you thrown out of your job exactly? Because you couldn't make the commute? I think you should either get back in touch with your employer and discuss maternity leave with them or ring up an employment rights agency and explain your circumstances to them.

    As for your boyfriend, he doesn't sound like he cared enough to do anything about this? Jobcentre can also help you with other benefits you may be entitled to such as housing benefit and can help you get on track with finding some accommodation. I signed onto job seekers for the second time, the first time was just before christmas, the first time it was 17.12.2009 and the money showed up a few days later on my account as a pending transaction going in on the 4.01.10. I realise at christmas and being my first payment it took longer. I signed on again thursday and I do know that it takes 3 working days after signing on, I am looking at my pending transactions again online for my account and it isn't showing a BACS, should I be getting the money monday or tuesday?????

  • Your payment should be up to FOUR (not 3) working days after you sign. It could come in 3 days, but expect it in 4. Don't contact the benefits agency until 4 working days have passed sinced you signed. Signing on Thursday means expect payment on Wednesday (4 days, Fri, Mon, Tue, Wed). This is the time to contact about late payments.

    You should be excused signing if it lands on a holiday, and payments brought forward if it lands on a holiday.

I am 17 and working one night a week at a restaurant. The job was advertised as 2 nights a week but my boss changed it to one night a week because of bad business, however a lot of the time she will ring me and say don't come in to night, there is no work so I hardly get paid.

I started looking for a new job and on Saturday I had an interview and the guy asked me how long my notice period is. I said none. Then when I went to work that night my boss made me sign a contract saying my notice period is a month. I think this is unreasonable because it is only one day a week and she only has to give me one weeks notice if she wants to sack me.

I had two copies of the contract one for me and one for her, I signed one and I thought I gave it to her but when I got home I discovered I had the signed one. So she doesn't actually have proof I signed it.

Anyway, if I do leave without any notice what can she do? She does not have my bank details?

hey sweets, she can't do nothing, especially if she doesnt have your contract. if she did the only thing she could do was stop paying you for the shifts you had already worked.

without a contract you could tell her to go F her job and she could do nothing at all!!! :) get out of there and get yourself a better job hun :)

  • If you have signed a contract saying 1 months notice then that is what is required.
    They could if they wanted take action against you for breach of contract if you left before that.
    For 1 day a week though that is unlikely and it is also unlikely that the contract would be enforceable anyway.

    Just give them 1 weeks notice and leave after that.
  • She can't do a thing. It is illegal to withhold pay. You are not a slave and that contract would not hold up in court. If she figures out that she has the unsigned copy and asks you to sign it again tell her you will if she makes a contract that you will get x-amount of hours a week and that she won't call you off.
  • Nothing she could do.
    If she owes you any money she might refuse to pay it, and you'd have to sue her for any money you are owed.

    Presumably you won't be wanting a reference off her, so don't worry about it...just go.
  • All she can do is not paying you for any money she have in hand. Did you get paid weekly? or every time you work she pays you? if you were paid monthly then she can keep it simply because you never gave her any notice.

  • u only have to give places 2 wks notice so that is bull that she had u sign something for a month. and it is up to you if u want to give the 2 wks no one can force u it is out of curtousy so they can find someone to fill the position. most do give 2 wks so they have good contacts to give in the future to other employers when they are trying to get hired but she sounds like a stupid lady that wouldn't be a good contact for you anyway so i say forget her especially since it's only once a week not worth your while.
  • She can't do anything if you leave without notice. In CA, she would be required to pay you for any hours that you worked and for any vacation time that you may have accrued. I don't know about the legality of her requiring you to sign a contract stating that you must give one months notice to leave, but I think that it is unreasonable. The decent thing is to give two weeks notice, but if you don't about the only thing she can do is tell any future employers that call for a reference that you left without notice.
    You only work one night a week, so I doubt she will be too upset with you.
  • I don't believe you are compelled to give any notice. However, I think you should give 7 days notice as suggested by Bibs.

erm i think you could either get a paper round
or just ask around in news agents or cafes and ask if they need an assistant, you might find you only get to stack magazines or makes cups of tea of something but its better than nothing :D

  • Getting a job before you are 16 can be difficult as many companies only recruit those aged 16 and over.

    Your best option is to ask in and around local privately owned businesses because they don't have the same policies that restrict high street corporate stores.

    When I was 14 I got my first job in the kitchen at the local pub my dad used to drink at so perhaps your parents might be able to point you in the right direction if they know anyone who runs a business that might need a hand.

Most people get two types of answers to this question. The first will be "They're all scams". The second will be people trying to get you to sign up under them on some site so that they'll make money off of anything you do.

I'm not trying to be mean here, just honest. No reason you should get scammed just because so many other people are. (Just do a search under this site for "on-line jobs" "data entry job" and you see hundreds if not thousands of questions just like yours.)

I mean think about it -- if there were good on-line jobs available, all those people who lost their jobs and are trying to keep a roof over their families' heads and food on the table would be doing those jobs already.

Most of the sites just want your personal information so they can rip you off or send 80 kazillion junk emails.

My wife is a Care Worker, thus can be required to work weekends. She gets 28 days per year holiday entitlement, which is normal. However, if she books 2 weeks holiday, her employer says that ALL of the days over the two weeks are counted as days taken off = 14 days. At my company it only counts as 10 days (Monday - Friday per week taken). Is this correct/allowed? Her holidays being taken are surely being based on a 7 day working week, which I am sure is illegal. Could anyone please advise, and include a possible link to legal literature? Thank you.

If your wife's working hours are based on a 5 day/37-40 hour week then a week = 5days work and 2 days off, regardless of shift and weekend working. In that case, 2 weeks holiday is 10 working days.

I suspect the issue is with one or two line managers not fully understanding how this works themselves - I'd advise your wife to talk to THEIR manager or the HR dept (if the company she works for has one) to get this clarified. If you still think they've got it wrong, then ACAS (linked from the direct giov site) is your best bet to take things further.

  • My daughter is a care worker and works all those weird hours and shifts but when she takes holiday it is classed as a week is 5 days just as you stated, unless her contract states that she is employed weekends but whatever days it is it is still 5 days. Contact the Care Commission and check with them. Hubby works a 7 day week night shift but when he takes holidays he only gets and is paid for 5 days.
  • Well then your wife shoudl say , I only want monday to friday off, then it would have to count as 5 days, Then ask again for the next monday to friday,

    I DOUBT IT WILL BE COUNTED AS A HOLIDAY, i think her employer will win any debate about this. Saturday and sunday are NOT Counted as holiday. I am pretty sure about that. The only way to get out of it, is the answer i provided above.
  • ACAS or the CAB are probably your best sources of advice. It will probably depend on your wife's contract of employment, say she is employed to work 5 days out of 7 on a shift system then to take a week of will 'cost' 5 days leave. You don't have to take leave for scheduled days off.
  • i am guessing your wife only works 5 days out of 7 so 2 weeks holiday should be 1o days holiday and 4 days off. What country are you in?
    It sounds like they are trying to get her to use up her holiday, if you are in the UK contact ACAS

Is it Absolutely necessary to explain a gap in my CV?

I am a Spanish graduate, just got my masters degree in 2009, and it is very hard for me to write a good CV.
I have done a 5 months internship in 2008 and then I have been au pair in the UK for 7 months in 2009 and I got another internship in London for 4 months. I am not sure whether I should mention that I been Au pair between this two internships to explain the nearly 9 months gap between them.

You don't have to be too specific in your CV. You don't even really need to include exact dates, it's usually acceptable to just use the years, and if you do that there won't appear to be a gap. It would show one internship in 2008, and another internship in 2009.

If you do include more specific dates, it is not necessary to explain the gap on the CV itself, however you'll probably want to explain it on your Covering Letter.

Hi, You could start by taking a recognised first aid course where you live and ask the tutor. At least this would show any prospective employer that you showed willingness to learn and advance your career. Even if you don''t get a paramedics job straight away, most employers will pay extra for someone who is qualified in first aid as it is an asset to the workplace. Of course it's true. All trades have their induction courses.

When I first started working with horses I had to do the mucking out for a year.

Ok, so Im on job seekers allowance, and i thought you could work 16 hours a week without it being stopped, I told the jobcentre I had 2 days work before hand, and then when i go to sign, they say I have to stop this claim because i worked 16 hours, your only allowed up to 15 and 3 quarter hours, they never said this before. Now I have to go through the whole process of claiming again. Are they right?

Yes it is correct. Any work of 16 hours or more stops your claim straight away. You need to ring 0800 055 6688 and tell them that you need to make a Rapid Reclaim. You will be given an appointment at the Jobcentre but it will not take any where as long as it did the first time. Also, claim back to the day after you finished the two days work. To be honest, you would have been very unlikely to have been paid for the week in which you worked because you would have earned more than the JSA would have been for that week. You only get a £5 disregard, so if you earned more than £69.30, no JSA would be paid

  • I had loads of problems with JSA but they prob are right. I worked 12 hours a week and was claiming JSA and to make my money up they paid me £1 a week. I give up in the end its too much messing.

So can my mum do anything about that? I mean she was working 35 and now she works 20 her weekly wage drops a lot which means monthly she makes a lot less.

Is there any sort of thing she can claim?

In this situation she has 2 choices .. accept it as a 'temporary change', or refuse (and be made Redundant)

Whatever she decides, she should start looking for another job immediately .. when companies do this, they are one step from bankruptcy ..

  • if she is in the UK no they cant do that
    if she has been working there longer than 12 months they have to ask her to drop her hours, if there is no work for a full time worker then they must make her redundant
    so they should come to your mum and say, we are sorry but we cant keep you on full time, we can make you redundant or put you on part time
    your mum should ask for redundancy
    by putting workers on part time, they are hoping that most will just leave, that means they are getting away with out paying them redundancy money that is at least a weeks wage for every year worked

  • No she cannot, she is very lucky that her employer is letting her work 20 hours. Many places will just let you go.

I work in a call centre with a team of about 20 people. I need to organise an incentive to ensure that their outbound call rate is maintained at a high and productive level. Any ideas? I've got a budget of £20 min & £40 max.

Well with that sort of budget you are going to need to be creative.

Cash all well and good, but the prospect of a couple of ten pound notes is not really going to set people alight with enthusiasm

I suggest a trip to your local supermarket, hunt around the special offers and get a bottle of champagne and 2/3 bottles of wine.

Have the champagne for the best performer
Maybe wine for the runner up

Some folk will think they can never match up with the high performers in the team so give them something to aim for have a prize or maybe two prizes for the best improvement made by an individual

Now sell the incentive scheme. Its not just champagne and wine it's Luxury Champagne and Fine Wine.

  • I worked in a call centre for 2 years when I became the Team leader, we had regular incentives but i hated them and when I took over as leader I stopped the incentives. You know it is a numbers game with the calls but quality is better than quantity and if the person is good at their job they don't need incentives as they are working to the best of their ability and you have to accept the bad to appreciate the good. If you give prises of money they will work harder by making more calls but the general outcome of the work wont be any better. I stayed in call centre work for over 9 years and then became a Marketing Executive and now a Business Development Manager which in the long run is no different from telesales, the company I am now with give incentive regularly but it doesn't help with the leads or sales as we already work our hardest and because of these incentive I feel the company doesn't appreciate the work we do and most of us are looking for other employment.
  • I have to agree with Jackie m the company knows who work hard and I imagine they all do,basically one cannot get blood out of a stone.The truth of the matter is that is unrealistic to expect high productivity continuously.You could try giving the winner a days holiday as a prize rather than bribes of money or drink,or even an extended lunch hour.

I finished uni about 6 months ago studying graphic design. It took me a couple of months to get a job but I have now been at a small design place for about 4 months now. At first I enjoyed it and was learning a lot but now I have sort of got to the stage where I am so bored with what we do. We don't design that much, and probably spend most of the time doing non design things. I spoke to my tutor about this and he told me to only stay whilst I'm learning and aim a lot higher rather than leaving it too long. I want to move out asap too but don't want to risk moving near where my current job is and wasting deposit etc only for me to find a job 50 miles away elsewhere. I'm just not sure what to do. I feel quite secure in my current job, but am just really bored there. I worked for 5 years before I went to uni in a place I hated so don't want to be in that situation again and spend years and years there. But I am quite fearful of going for bigger design jobs as I aint too confident in my design ability and am not sure if I would last all that long at a top company. I can't move out really until I decide what I will do. Any advice would be great thanks. Sorry this question is a bit long winded :)

if you leave your job now it isnt goin to look great on your cv after 4 months lol if i was you i would stick at the job even if ot is boring and aim to please your employer then in a few months time or a year start to apply for the better jobs that way you can gain experience and have a cracking reference at the end of it, employers like to see that their potential employees stick at and work hard at their jobs.
everyone has start from the bottom and work their way up even with qualifications such as yours
i would definately just grin and bare it for just a little longer it will be worth it in the end

Is all the studying to become a vet really worth it?

you have to get A in Chemistry and Biology at A-level :O that's hard, really hard. and some universities urge you to take either maths or physics as a 3rd subject, this all sounds really hard, and really boring. then after all that you have 5 years studying at uni! i'm not sure whether i can be bothered, but i want to know whether i should go for it.

i just did my work experience at a vets and had an amazing time, i love all animals an i don't care about the pay :)

What do you really want?

Is it your personal goal for you to be a vet or pressure from family etc.

In ten years time you will be making good money and should have a affluant rewarding life.

Also make sure you have a great time UNI, its about making friends and having rewarding experiences as well as qualifications.

Good luck, i'm sure deep down you know the right answer.

  • It is a good idea to be asking now - it is a lot of work.

    But the answer has to come from within. No outside answer will give you the stamina you need.

    It is a calling - you must want to do it because you will see a lot of unpleasant things, along with a lot of pleasant ones.
  • If you don't care about animals, just what you can make, then it is not the job for you, become a banker
  • If you really love animals, then of course it's worth it.
  • If it is not worth choose an another!
