Are union workers protected from job cut or job nature change during this economic situation?

On this economic situation, are union workers protected from job change. If for example, a person was hired as a superintendent of a building, then during this difficult economic situation he was asked to pick up on other responsibilities of a porter since the building is going let some porters go. I know that in private firms, a worker may not be likely to challenge this job nature change. How about with union workers? Can they challenge this and be protected by the union? Thank you.

It all depends what your actual job description is and what your union contract states. In all honesty, I seriously doubt that a contract would state that a supervisor, or superintendent, would not be allowed to 'step up' and do other duties. In these ecomonic times, I certainly wouldnt challenge it since they could always eliminate your position and just keep the other porters.

To get the real answer, you are going to have to contact your union rep directly and ask or refer to your contract.

• No they cannot be asked or ordered to work out of job title unless the union executives approve that. Job description and classification is a contractual agreement.

Would this be grounds for dismissal?

Seven months after the new employee began working for your company you learn that he did so well on the interview because he had one of his friends do the interview with the same interviewer the day before his own interview.

Since then, he's done well and CV along with all the references check out but...he definitely had an advantage when it came to the interview.

Absolutely not. The applicant hasn't done anything wrong, and in fairness there should never be two interviews the same: just as the applicants are all different & unique, the interviewer should adapt each interview to the candidate in front of them.

You could pull up the interviewer about their standards & performance, but certainly nothing to criticise the employee who was clearly a good choice.

• I would say no, unless the new employee lied about it. He had an advantage because he took the initiative to create the advantage. His actions were shrewd, and skirt the fringes of ethical behavior. But it's not a slam dunk "you're fired."

I have just started learning how to type, can you please tell me how long it should take to become a pretty good typist and how many wpm i should be able to type, right now its only 29wpm :O(

Are you learning touch typing? I presume you are. Like everything, practise makes perfect. The more you practise, the better and quicker you will become. If you only do it once a week you aren't going to get very far. If you do a little each day your speed will pick up very quickly. 29wpm is good for a learner. Remember, though, anyone can bash away at a 100wpm, but if their spelling and accuracy is bad, then they aren't going to get anywhere because they'll have to do it all again and their 100wpm will look stupid. 29 accurate wpm is a lot better than loads of mistakes at 60wpm. While you are doing the typing course, do an English course as well so that whatever you are writing is correct. As you plan a medical career, read medical books to get the spellings correct of lots of different medical terms. The more you know of the background of your chosen career, the better at it you will be. (and the more money you will earn while you are doing it!!)

• First and foremost, try to relax, don't try for speed at first while learning but use as your goal to get no errors.
  You may be asked how fast you type, but speed is no good if it is full or errors.
  The more you type in your learning, the faster your speed will become.
  
  I can remember the first job typing test I took, was scared to death, but I sat down with the thought "whatever" and typed away more at ease when I didn't feel like this was a make or break to me.

dude to become a taxi driver it will take you on avergae 3 years by then you likely to get put off. it also requires an investment LOL

better for you will be mini cab driving most likely you may have to buy your own car unless you can find work for a ompany that supplies you with a vehicle.

However if you decide to buy your own vehicle to obtain a mini cab license it may cost you around £700. Plus your insurance which depends on you.

However you intend to drive in the evening so there's more money at that time.

I applied for a job and today I was told the job was mine, pending references.

When I applied it said;

I was just wondering, what exactly do they email my references?

Different companies have different procedures or reference requirements. Most likely they would be trying to ascertain your punctuality, attendance history and any history of disciplinary or unfriendly behaviour towards other employees.

Ive been off sick since january can anyone tell me if i handed my notice in will i get holiday pay owed to me?

if so will i get the full amount owed as holidays started in jan so what will i be entitled too

You are actually entitled to the full holiday allowance for the time you were employed, even while sick. As you won't have had the chance to take the holidays, you would be entitled to the full wages for these.

The position was recently confirmed in a House of Lords ruling.

I want to train to go into nursing where/how do i begin?

I am almost 31 and worked in an office until I took almost 5 years out to raise my son, he has just started school and I now find myself wanting to start working again. First you have to pick what school you want to go to. Community colleges are of course much cheaper than universities. I am going to my local community college for nursing. First you have to apply for admission at the school. you can usually do this online. Then if you will be applying for financial aid, apply online with the FAFSA application. After you are admitted to the school they will have you take assesment test at the school to see which classes you need to take. Before you can apply to the nursing program, there are pre-requisite classes you need to complete. You will know which ones you need to do based on your assesment scores. Then you just pick your classes for the semester and get started. If you go to the website for the school you want to attend they usually have a step by step guide to help you get started. you can also call the school and set up an appointment with an advisor. • If you're in the united states, go to a college campus, a regular one or a community, it doesn't matter and ask them if they have a nursing program, if they do, ask them about it and if they don't ask where you can go to acquire the skills to become a nurse. My college offers a great nursing program, and we have our own little hospital building 5 minutes away from our school. But I'm studying to become an accountant, but your best bet would be to call or meet up with a college counselor for help.
• Look up colleges in your area and see if they offewr the degree, also you will still have to take prereqsets I am in school now to become an RN and thats how i started. AND I am now on my way...:) Yea just look up the schools if they offer a degree and if you are serious about it then go up there and talk to them, You will also have to take test before get into any classes but dont worry its just a placement test and it cost about 30 dollars here in houston tx....GOOD LUCK if you want to know anything else about it just email me or post another question on here

I worked at Next and I can imgaine the questions are pretty similar. Basically how would you serve customers/ deal with difficult customer/ what kind of work do you expect etc. It'll be really easy questions so long as you prepare some text book answers.

You're probably in for some long boring stocking of shelves and politely smiling at rude members of the public who, quite frankly, you'd rather punch or chase around the store with a large blunt object. Such is life :)

  I don't know where Matt went to school, but double check with your Year Leader on the importance of work experience first!
  In my school we check on students daily, and IT DOES appear in the end of Y11 report which we attach to their college application!
  So if you decide to take Matt's advice and take 2 weekd off, please check that it won't do you any injustice later!
  
  It is true that they will probabily make you do insignificant tasks which may seem a little boring. And that's why you need to make sure that you organize your own work experience if you want to avoid that situation.
  What I usually advice my students, is to do some research about companies which deals with what you're interested in (in your case, maybe vets, pet shops etc...), and contact them directly. They may need adult support in which case your form tutor should be able to write a letter of recomendation.
  Go and see them in person, and dicuss with them what it is that you are hoping to get out of that experience, and what kind of work you'd like to be involved in during your week with them. Some employers are not very good at being creative, but they will for sure appreciate your initiative!
  In any case, don't hesitate to dicuss any issues with them if you are not happy with your work; whatever you do, PLEASE don't just walk out! Everything is a learning experience, and take it for what it is!!!

I've always thought the same as the first answer...30 days, depends what sort of sample it is though I guess.

• As a manager myself ive carried out loads of drug tests on staff and can inform you that the "average" time that weed stays in your body to be detectable is 6 weeks (42 days). So that makes you right on the borderline, but bear in mind that 6 weeks is an average and you may need longer. Learn a lesson for the future.
• For urinary drug tests THC will be clear of the urine after 30 days of inhaling marijuana. Urinary tests are most common for those types of interviews so in my opinion you will be fine. Drink plenty of water in the meantime if you want to be completely sure of yourself.
• You are most likely okay -- is isn't impossible that you will test positive, but the federal guidelines give 5 weeks as the outside boundary of standard testing methods.
• Depends on the test. Drink tooons of water and pure cranberry juice. Like the stuff you get at a health food store, not Ocean Splash. It'll help flush out your system.

OK. I am thinking about going self employed, but before I do so I need to know if I can get any benefits if things arnt working out at first. I dont want to be in the situation where I am spending all my money on getting the business up and running, but not getting anything to live on.

Can I get job seekers allowence? How about housing and council tax benefits. What would I be entitled to and how would it work out?

if ur self employed u can still claim working/child tax credits and housing/council tax benefit. u r asked to give an estimate of yr income for the first 13 weeks and the figures are based on that then they review it up or down depending on yr income. i went self employed after being on income support for a couple of years (due to having to be full time carer for my mum) i got all of those benefits plus £40 in work credit for a year and £200 back to work grant but u have to have been on income support for a year i think to qualify for these. good luck.

• You will be able to claim Working Tax Credits. If you say that you are working over 36 hours a week, and earning small amounts initially, then you will get WTC. If you are claiming WTC, you are entitled to Housing Benefits. Good luck with you new business.

so basically i am 16 currently at sixth form and decided a few years ago i wanted to go into the fitness industry such as in a gym helping people use the equipment etc.

i was just wondering where would i start to become one? i was trying to get on a government funded course with lifestyle but as im in education they would not fund it as they put money into colleges to do the course.

do you think i should ring back and mention if i get onto the course i will drop out of college (to be honest i hate going there) or should i try somewhere else.

I haven't been paid what can I do?

I work for a local authority in the UK on a relief part time youth worker contract. Anyway I did a few hours for them and now for the second month I haven't been paid! the first month I phoned up and asked what was going on and they said they hadn't processed the paper work in time and it would now be paid next month, next month's here and guess what, no money! I'm going to phone them again but was wondering if there is anything more I can do as I'm expecting to be asked to wait again until next month. This is for work done back in July and I think their taking the mickey. It only equates to £100 but it's money I desperately need and I thought I'd be safe working for a local authority.

Any Advice?

Hi i was in the same situation my boss hardly paid me. I called up my local citizens advice bureau and they gave me very good advice. I suggest you call your local one and see what your options are hun. They said to me though because there was no contract i couldnt do much so my first thin is make sure you have a contract and if not request one but no matter whether or not call the cab and they will help you solve this.

Be prepared for the interview as you were previously. Listen closely about the position to determine if it is the same one or a different one. after you have answered all their questions and if they ask you if you have any questions you might ask them the following type of question, How long has the position been empty? This will provide you an idea if it was filled by someone else and they are gone or if they had to wait because of the economy. It will also tell you whether or not you are going to be compared to the previous person who may have left or if you are going to be received with open arms because you are going to be relieving work from others. • Do you know why they turned you down the first time? It's always a good idea to know so you know what you can improve on for today. Being that you applied before, you will know what to expect from them and what they are looking for. Knowing why you want a job is always important, and expressing yourself too. You should know and be able to be truthful about your positive and negative qualities. Also explain what you think you can bring to their store, what is special about you.

you can always ask for an internship at a law office. You most likely will be a paper pusher of some sort but you can at-least observe the inner workings. It also helps if you are going to school to earn some kind of law degree. Hope this helps.
